What is private van insurance?
Private van insurance is a policy that can be taken out when you only drive your van for personal purposes or commuting.
Activities you might use your vehicle for include:
- Going on holiday (either in the UK or abroad)
- Camping trips
- Taking part in hobbies or activities like mountain biking or fishing trips
- Using it to go on hikes with your dogs
- Shopping
- Transporting personal belongings
- Moving house – or helping friends move

Do I need private van insurance or commercial cover?
This depends on how you plan on using your vehicle. For instance, if you only use your van for personal use or commuting, a private van insurance policy is the best option.
If, on the other hand, you use your vehicle to make money, you’ll need a commercial van insurance policy. We can cover commercial vehicles too, including those used for courier work and company work. We can also insure classic commercial vehicles.

Extra Benefits
Flex Drive
Drive Any Car Insurance
There are many reasons you might need to drive someone else’s car, either in an emergency or as part of an agreement.
While many policies include third party cover for you to drive any vehicle, this often leaves you liable for the full cost of your own damage caused in the event of an accident.
Our Flex Drive car insurance extends your cover to include accidental damage cover on the vehicle you’re driving, just like a fully comprehensive policy. It covers claims up to £20,000 on any car you use.
That extra cover will give you the confidence to drive any vehicle, with the owner’s permission, at any time.

What are the different types of personal van insurance?
The three main types are:
- Third party: this is the minimum level of cover you can take out to legally drive on public roads in the UK. It covers you for any damage caused to other people’s vehicles or property, as well as any injuries they might sustain.
- Third party, fire and theft: this provides the same level of cover as third party insurance, as well as the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle if it’s damaged by fire or stolen.
- Fully comprehensive: this is the highest level of cover you can take out. It covers everything in the previous two levels, plus any damage to your vehicle regardless of who was at fault for the accident.

FAQs
Is a private van classed as commercial for insurance purposes?
No, you can get a private van insurance policy if you’re only using your van for hobbies, personal trips, and other reasons outside of making money.
Can I use private van insurance for commuting?
Yes, whilst most private van insurance policies from other providers don’t include cover for commuting, we can. We offer social, domestic, pleasure and commuting policies (also known as SDP and commuting use) if needed.
Do privately owned vans cost more to insure?
In general, no. The risks involved with owning a van for personal use are generally lower than if you were to own a van for commercial use. If you’re using a van for commercial purposes, chances are you’re driving more miles, and will often do so in high-traffic areas like cities, especially if you’re a courier.
That being said, the easiest way to find out how much your policy will cost is to contact us directly for a quote.
