How much is classic van insurance?

Insurance for your classic van doesn’t have to break the bank. There are several ways you can reduce the cost of van insurance.

Plus, did you know that 82.4%* of our customers would have got a cheaper insurance quote if they’d spoken to us over the phone instead of going online? Call us now and we’ll try to beat any other quote you’ve received.

The following methods can also help you get cheaper van insurance:

Add security features
Vans often carry expensive goods and tools. According to the BBC this is resulting in an epidemic in tool theft, with a theft occurring every 23 minutes in the UK. In a lot of cases, a dashcam, immobiliser or GPS tracker will help reduce your insurance premiums.

Pay annually
In general, paying your van insurance quote will be less expensive if you pay for it annually instead of monthly. Of course, this will depend on your situation.

Shop around
Compare quotes using comparison sites and phone around, but we suggest that after you shop around, you always call us after. Wherever possible, we aim to beat your quote.

How you’re using your van
The type of insurance you need will depend on how you’re using your van. For instance, if you aren’t using it for commuting or commercial use, this can reduce your level of risk in the eyes of your insurer.

Park in a garage
If your van is parked in a secure place like a garage, this reduces the likelihood that your van will get stolen or broken into. This will therefore help you get cheaper insurance rates.

Don’t automatically renew
When your van insurance expires for the year, the easiest thing to do is let your policy renew automatically. However, according to Which?, this could be costing Brits up to £1.4bn every year. With a little extra effort, you could be saving hundreds on your next van insurance bill.

Limiting your miles
While this is probably not suitable for couriers, it could be an option if you use your van for less than a few thousand miles a year. We were actually the pioneers for this type of policy, so we’re always proud when we can get you a great deal based on your own individual circumstances.

FAQs

If you’re unsure, the best way to check is through the Motor Insurance Database (askMID). This is a free online tool that allows you to check if your vehicle is insured. All you need is your vehicle registration number.

Like standard car insurance, there are three different types of van insurance. The type of cover you need will depend on several factors, including the type of van you drive and what you’re using it for.

  • Third party only: this is the minimum level of cover you can get. If you’re involved in an accident, this type of insurance will cover you for any damage caused to another vehicle. However, it won’t cover any damage done to your car or medical cover.
  • Third party, fire and theft: this will cover you in the above circumstances, with additional protection for your vehicle against fire and theft.
  • Comprehensive cover: this is the highest level of insurance you can get. In the event that you get involved in an accident, any damage to your person, your van, or the other person’s vehicle and person will be covered.

Factors like carrying hazardous materials, having a previous conviction, or driving a modified van can all raise alarms for some insurance providers. If you’re struggling to get a quote, contact us. We have a panel of over 30 insurers, meaning we’re often able to insure the “insurable”.

This will depend on the company you work for, but we’re seeing a lot more cases where you won’t be covered through your company. We recommend that you check with your manager, and if you don’t have a policy, contact us to find out how we can help. Whether you’re a courier for a large corporation or you work for a small business, we should be able to help you!

Whilst van insurance policies do exist for young drivers, a number of insurance providers won’t even consider insuring drivers under 21 or 25 on a van. Thankfully, we work with a wide range of insurers who will consider each case individually. We’ve even insured 17 year olds before!

If you’ve already been driving for a year or two in a standard car or moped, let us know. A clean record or no claims bonus on a previous vehicle could actually help your case as you already have accident-free experience on the road.

In most cases, having comprehensive car insurance means you can drive a van. However, in this case you will usually only be covered for third party damage. This means that you’ll have to pay out of pocket for any damage done to your van.

It’s always best to speak to your insurance provider or broker. If you have a policy through us, give us a call on 0344 381 6504 and we can look into your coverage policy.

In some cases this is possible, though it will depend on who you’re using as an insurer. If you’ve purchased insurance through us, give us a ring and we’ll let you know if it can be done.

As a specialist insurance broker, we’re used to getting queries on this type of thing. In fact, we have a whole page dedicated to modified van insurance. When you call us, make sure you let us know how you’ve modified your van and how you’ve built the camper as this will impact your premiums.

Hiring a van can be stressful, and even more so if you’re confused about insurance. We have short-term van insurance policies available, from as short a period as one day. Contact us for more details!

VAT isn’t actually charged on insurance, so there’s nothing to recoup when you take out a policy on your van.
