Does my car insurance cover towing a transporter trailer?

Taking out a separate transporter trailer insurance policy gives you peace of mind. Our cover protects against theft, fire, accidental damage or public liability as standard.

You’re allowed to tow a car trailer if you’ve passed your driving test, but please note that the towing allowance will differ depending on when you passed your driving test (i.e. before or after the 1st January 1997).

Before 1st January 1997

You’re usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of 8,250kg. Please note that the MAM is the limit for how much the vehicle and trailer can weigh when it’s loaded.

After 1st January 1997

You can:

  • Drive a car or van with a MAM of up to 3,500kg and tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 750kg.
  • Tow a trailer with a MAM higher than 750kg, as long as the combined MAM of both the vehicle and trailer does not exceed 3,500kg.
